Julie Bowen’s brood isn’t impressed by her day job. “They don’t give a rat’s patootie about Modern Family,” the actress, 44, tells Us of Oliver, 7, and twins John and Gustav, 5. But as the voice of firefighting aircraft Lil’ Dipper in the new animated film Planes: Fire & Rescue, “I have gotten so many cool points. When they see posters, they make me stop and take pictures!” The two-time Emmy winner (wed to software developer Scott Phillips) shares more.
Q: Were you familiar with the first Planes?
My boys are huge fans. Huge! I mean, I love it, but I’m excited they’ll have something to replace it in the constant rotation.
Q: Did you practice your voice on them?
No. My children detest when I do voices. We read Harry Potter together and they would only allow me to do Hagrid. No one in the house is amused by me the way that I’m amused by me.
Q: You just got your fifth Emmy nomination! How did you celebrate?
I was being jumped on by three very excited little boys – not because of the nomination, but because they found out there was a new Minecraft update. It had wolves!
Q: You’ve won seven major awards. Do the boys play with your trophies?
You can’t wind them up, so they’re not that exciting. Oliver made me an award that he thought would be more fun. It’s a mask with feathers. It sits next to my Emmys!
